Understanding hyperpigmentation and how to treat it
By Dr. Min-ji Park••9 min read

Hyperpigmentation can be stubborn. Learn about the root causes—from sun exposure to post-inflammatory marks—and active ingredients that work.
Hyperpigmentation occurs when the skin produces excess melanin, creating dark spots or patches. This condition is extremely common but can be frustratingly stubborn to clear. Understanding what triggers it is the first step toward finding an effective treatment path.
Common Triggers
Sun exposure is the number one cause, as UV rays stimulate melanin production. Other common triggers include hormonal fluctuations (melasma) and inflammation from acne or skin injuries (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or PIH).
